The government has instructed ZCCM-IH to contact Vedanta Resources in order to negotiate an amicable agreement about Konkola Copper Mines (KCM).
The government is interested in discussion, according to Mines and Minerals Development Minister PAUL KABUSWE, thus ZCCM-IH should send its attorneys to speak with their Vedanta counterparts about the situation.
Government, according to Mr. KABUSWE, cannot wait any longer; the next arbitration hearing is scheduled for January 9, 2023.
He was addressing today in Lusaka at a press conference.
According to Mr. KABUSWE, the government wants KCM to return to normal as soon as feasible.
The Minister further stated that the government will not stand by when investors mistreat employees.
Meanwhile, Mr. KABUSWE claimed that the audit of mining permits was complete and that President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA had received the report.
The report, according to Mr. KABUSWE, will be discussed at the following cabinet meeting, after which the mining licenses will be opened.
And Mr. KABUSWE disclosed that the Kasenseli gold mine will be opened after the difficulties are overcome.
