‘Total bulls***’: Trevor Noah slams African travel ban

As with many Africans, Trevor Noah has lashed out at a controversial travel ban affecting the continent.

South Africa and other African countries have been imposed with a travel ban – after scientists in the country announced they had discovered a new Covid-19 variant; Omicron.

Health experts have labelled Omicron a “variant of concern”, which has left the world and scientists scrambling. But like the rest of us, The Daily Show host is infuriated by the discriminatory ban on the continent.

    TREVOR NOAH SLAMS TRAVEL BAN

During an episode of The Daily Show on Monday evening, Trevor Noah slammed the lack of logic behind the travel ban, which restricts travelers from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Lesotho, Eswatini and Namibia.

He said: “Omicron has already been done in over a dozen countries around the world. We don’t know where it started. We don’t know how long it’s been around. It’s everywhere — from Hong Kong, to Israel, to Spain“So why aren’t you banning travel from all of those countries too? Huh? Only the African countries? I still don’t get the logic. You think omicron is going to get to Europe and then just decide to stay there?”.Trevor Noah

The 37-year-old comedian claimed that the travel ban would have a disastrous effect on the continent.

He added: “I mean, maybe America is buying itself a couple of weeks before it gets overrun with omicron. But don’t forget about the cost of this action too.”

    ‘I CAN’T GO HOME’

Trevor Noah claimed that the travel ban would stop countries from announcing any new developments out of fear of the repercussions.

He continued: “You do realize that other countries are paying attention. And they realize that if they’re going to get punished for telling the world about new variants, they’re going to stop telling the world whenever their scientists discover new variants.”

“I’m just saying don’t be surprised when the next variant pops up in Europe and Italian scientists come out acting like nothing is wrong: ‘Everything is fine. This is just, how you say, a TikTok challenge’.

He also alluded to not being able to visit his home in South Africa.

“That’s where we are right now: There’s a new coronavirus that we don’t know anything about. Because of that, I can’t go home to my uncle’s baby shower…Man, I really wanted to go. You don’t see your uncle getting showered by babies much.”

    PIERS MORGAN AGREES

Meanwhile controversial UK media personality Piers Morgan shared similar sentiments to Trevor Noah about the travel ban.

He also expressed his disgust that the Covid-19 variant Omicron had been hailed the “South African variant” by world media.

He tweeted: “Omicron is not a ‘South African variant’, it’s a variant that was spotted & reported by brilliant South African scientists so fast the world has a chance to get on top of it. Could have originated anywhere”.Piers Morgan
