A list of the best-performing public schools in South Africa

The Department of Basic Education found that most of the top-performing public schools in South African provinces are either English-speaking schools, Afrikaans medium schools, or dual-medium schools.

212 are English-speaking schools, 57 are Afrikaans medium schools and 55 are dual-medium, according to the departmental figures.

The department also identified 324 public schools that had an exceptional performance in the 2021 matric exams and also listed schools that had a consistent perfect performance in the past five years.

A provincial breakdown of 91 schools that achieved a 100% matric pass rate since 2017:

Gauteng: 25 schools  KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape: 22 schools  Free State: 14  North West: 4  Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga: 2  Northern Cape: 1  Limpopo: Null

The publication reports that no schools from Limpopo province were featured on the list.

The publication reports that Phumanyonya Highschool in Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal managed to maintain a perfect matric pass rate for five years and had the highest number of matriculants in 2021, with all 350 learners who wrote the exams passing.

It’s followed by Hoërskool Waterkloof in Gauteng with 316 learners, and Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool also in Gauteng province with 249.
