Six people were shot and killed in a shooting in Umlazi

Six people were shot and killed in a shooting in Umlazi on Saturday evening.

THE SHOOTING HAPPENED ON SATURDAY EVENING

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Brig Jay Naicker said police responded to the incident around 7 pm on Saturday evening.

“Residents reported gunshots on Saturday night.”

Naicker said it is alleged that six people were shot and killed by unknown suspects while at the U section in Umlazi.

“Four people were declared dead at the scene while the other two died in hospital. Among the victims are two females. The victims are believed to be between the ages of 14 and 28.”

He said the motive for the killings is suspected to be related to criminality.

Naicker said Umlazi SAPS is investigating charges of murder.

He furthermore said information received indicates that the six were allegedly involved in criminality and were shot and killed by their rivals.

Meanwhile, two alleged hijackers after a high-speed chase ensued along the R553 road and a shootout on Saturday in Zakaria Park.

BOTH THE ALLEGED HIJACKERS WERE ARRESTED

According to police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele the two men, aged 39 and 42, were arrested in Zakaria Park in Johannesburg on Saturday morning.

“On Saturday 28 August 2021 at around 06:00, the Retrak vehicle recovery team picked up a tracking signal that the hijacked white Toyota Hilux double cab bakkie was stationary in Zonkizizwe, Ekurhuleni at that time.”

Makhubele said the vehicle was reported as hijacked on Friday, 27 August 2021, at Dawn Park SAPS.

“As the recovery team was making its way to the location, they picked up another tracking signal that the hijacked vehicle was now moving, and they started following the hijacked vehicle’s movements until they attempted to intercept the hijacked vehicle along the R554 road.”
