KAIZER CHIEFS SIGN KAMOHELO MAHALTSI

So it was back in late June when Amakhosi announced the signing of Mahlatsi to offer himself in either the number 10, 8, or as an inverted 7 or 11 positions.

The 23-year-old from Sebokeng was signed from Swallows alongside the exciting right-back Dillan Solomons and midfield maestro Lehlogonolo Matlou.

For those that know Mahlatsi in Gauteng football, they said “Nyaope”, not Mahlatsi signed for the Glamour Boys.

It seems like Mahlatsi signed his Chiefs contract while nursing an injury.

WHY HE’S CALLED NYAOPE

Since the phenomenon of football nicknames often originate and ‘live in the streets’, there are various versions that explain who gave him the nickname and why.

But having watched the player at SuperSport United, Ubuntu FC, University of Pretoria, and Swallows in the PSL last season, Mahlatsi’s unusual playing style is presumably linked to his “Nyaope” nickname, as well as that unique facial expression.

In addition to his consistently energic smile, ‘Nyaope’ plays with magical close ball control, dribbling and gliding past defenders in a manner that seems slow and fast at the same time.

He often flashed a spaced-out smile as he seemingly moves unnaturally with the ball at his feet to deliver great vision, skill and flair.

Typical of story origins and nicknames, people in Sebokeng and the surrounding Gauteng areas are most likely to offer different explanations of why Mahlatsi is called ‘Nyaope.’
