Jacobs told the court that on March 4, 2019, he and a buddy were on their way to Pooke Se Bos, an informal settlement in Athlone, to retrieve his things because the community no longer wanted him there.

He killed Joshua by opening fire in his residence.

He acknowledged to attempting to assassinate Arendse, Blom, Hilda Estelle Barbers, Williams, and Tyrese Barbers.

The significance of child murders in the Western Cape was explained by state prosecutor Bonginkosi Maki.

When Jacobs opened fire, Maki claimed, he turned a safe space for Joshua (his home) into a death trap.

“The court must continuously endeavour to be the vanguard of the interests of the vulnerable members of the society, especially the children.

“The accused violated the deceased’s right to life, as enshrined in the Constitution,” Maki argued.

Nicolette Bell, the Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, praised the prosecution and investigative teams for their efforts in forcing the accused to enter into a plea and sentencing deal as the evidence against him grew.
