The Vice President of Malawi, Saulos Chilima, has been stripped off all his delegated powers after he was named in a $150m (£123m) corruption scandal.
The corruption scandal involves government contracts. Mr. Chilima is yet to respond to the allegations.Mr. Chilima was stripped off his powers by President Lazarus Chakwera. The allegations were contained in a report by Malawi’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).
The report sighted by African Entertainment named 53 current and former officials as having received money from British-Malawian businessman Zuneth Sattar between 2017 and 2021. The bribes were paid in relation to 16 contracts that the Malawi Police Service and the Malawi Defence Force awarded to five companies belonging to Mr Sattar, according to the report.
Aside the Vice President, the Head of Malawi’s police was named in the report and he has since been sacked. Malawi’s law do not give the President the power to sack his Vice since he is an elected official.
Thus, President Chakwera says in a national address on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, that “The best I can do for now, which is what I have decided to do, is to withhold from his office any delegated duties while waiting for the bureau to substantiate its allegations against him.”
