Twenty seven people allegedly linked to fake passport syndicate in custody

On Monday, a gang of twenty-seven people appeared in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court for allegedly running a bogus passport syndicate.

The Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act was used to charge them with corruption.

They allegedly used SA citizens’ information to create passports for foreign nationals, which they then sold for R40 000 each.

The arrest was made after a multi-disciplinary investigation including the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Cash In-Transit Task Team, Department of Home Affairs’ Anti-Corruption, and the Johannesburg Central Tactical Response Team, according to NPA regional spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane.

She said the sting operation took place in the early hours of Friday morning at the Krugersdorp Department of Home Affairs.

“Law enforcement authorities received a tip-off about the alleged passport making syndicate that works with Home Affairs officials, to identify South Africans (SA) that are willing to sell their identities for R500,” said Mjonondwane.

All of the defendants have been remanded in custody and the case has been postponed to April 5th for bail preparation investigations.
