Job Mokgoro (73) has resigned as the Premier of the North West. Mokgoro served as the 6th Premier of North West from June 2018 until his resignation in August 2021. He is a member of the African National Congress.
Mokgoro was appointed premier in June 2018, taking over from Supra Mahumapelo, who was forced to resign due to the violent protests and calls for his removal as premier.
Mokgoro announced that he made a decision to resign voluntarily adding that he could have decided to resist his move but did it in the interest of the people of North West.
“I could have taken a popular stance but chose a road less travelled,” he said. He thanked communities in the province for supporting him since he took over as Premier three years ago. “The approach would not have arisen if it was not for the ANC,” he said.
Mokgoro will be replaced by Bushy Maape who holds a BA in psychology and economics from Unisa (completed while he was in prison), and a BA (Hons) in developmental studies and a BA (Hons) in economics from the University of the Western Cape. Maape is considered as the best qualified of the three candidates for the job.
The ANC spokesperson thanked Mokgoro for the “steps he has taken to accept the decision of the ANC as disciplined cadre. ANC will always rely on his wisdom to be able to strengthen and shape the government of the people of North West”.
