The case of alleged parliament arsonist Zandile Mafe has been postponed to 12 May 2022

Mervyn Meningo, the state prosecutor, also told the court that forensics tied Mafe to the fire that destroyed the National Assembly.

Mafe faces allegations of terrorism, arson, and theft, as well as housebreaking with the intent to conduct terrorism and arson.

Menigo told the court that forensic investigators were only allowed entry to Parliament on March 15, 2022, and he requested a six-week delay.

Menigo submitted an affidavit of investigating officer, Colonel Christian Gabriel Theron, to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), according to NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila. The affidavit stated that there was 50 tons of water in the basement of parliament, which needed to be cleared for forensic investigators to determine the costs and amount of damage.

Meningo submitted this is needed when dealing with arson and terrorism charges.

“He informed the court that a positive facial recognition report has been received and that the State will have a draft indictment and summary of facts ready at the next court appearance.

“He also advised the court that a high court date may be decided at the next court appearance” the NPA said.

The defense also notified the court that they had informed the State that Mafe’s doomed bail motion will be appealed to the high court.

According to the NPA, the State will fight the bail appeal.

The hearing has been rescheduled for May 12, 2022.
