The man appeared in court and bail was set at R25 800. He was unable to pay the amount and was subsequently remanded in custody at Pollsmoor Prison until his next court appearance.

Meanwhile, 94 of the 110 motorists arrested were arrested for driving under the influence and 16 for reckless and negligent driving.

“A total of 67 047 traffic violations were recorded. Officers also impounded 159 public transport vehicles and executed 1 637 warrants of arrest,” said the City.

On Monday morning, 1 August, traffic officers caught four suspects in the act of siphoning diesel from a truck parked in Parow.

“Even if the suspects had gotten away, travelling with large amounts of fuel in makeshift containers would have been very risky“While it’s difficult to speculate on the motive, it’s likely that the cost of fuel was a factor. Mercifully, the truck driver wasn’t hurt,” said JP Smith, Cape Town’s MayCo Member for Safety and Security.
