ALLEGED RAPIST DETECTIVE TO MAKE BAIL APPLICATION

The accused was arrested by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) on Friday, 19 August. The alleged rape occurred on 6 August. He has since resigned from the South African Police Service (SAPS).

IPID spokesperson, Lizzy Suping, said the matter was postponed to Monday, 29 August, for a formal bail application. The accused is remanded in custody until then.

On 6 August, the accused allegedly fetched the victim at her home for an interview at Kei Mouth police station after she opened a case against her boyfriend.

During the ride to the station, the accused allegedly made sexual advances toward the victim, which she rejected.

“At the Police Station, the suspect took the victim to an office where he allegedly raped her. Afterwards, the victim was able to run to the Community Service Centre (CSC) to lodge a complaint,” said Suping.

The South African reached out to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for further comment and asked IPID, which correctional facility the accused is being held in. These responses will be added once they are received.

In an unrelated incident, elsewhere in the Eastern Cape, a 45-year-old man allegedly raped a 13-year-old boy who he forced into his home in Libode. The accused was expected to appear in the local magistrate’s court on Monday.
