Netflix is set to enrich our viewing experience this July with another local treasure, a riveting crime thriller titled “Marked,” slated to make its debut on 31 July 2025. This intense six-part series delves into the tumultuous life of Babalwa, portrayed by the talented Lerato Mvelase. Babalwa is a cash-in-transit security guard who finds herself teetering on the brink when her daughter becomes gravely ill and the societal safety nets fail her. Faced with a lack of savings, no health insurance, and an urgent need for life-saving treatment for her child, Babalwa is confronted with an unimaginable choice: violate the law or risk losing her family.
What begins as a quiet battle against insurmountable medical expenses rapidly escalates into a daring high-stakes heist. Babalwa becomes entangled with a local hustler, Zweli, played by Sphamandla Dhludhlu, and her fellow security guard, Tebza, brought to life by S’Dumo Mtshali. In a treacherous world where betrayal is commonplace and trust is a costly commodity, Babalwa is drawn further into a perilous moral quandary, compelled to forsake compassion in favor of survival at any price.
“Marked” showcases an impressive ensemble of South African talent, including Bonko Khoza, who plays Babalwa’s principled husband, Lungile, and Ama Qamata as their ailing daughter, Palesa. The drama is further enriched by the dynamic performances of Jerry Mofokeng wa Makhetha, Desmond Dube, Natasha Thahane, Gaisang Noge, Linda Sokhulu, and Mduduzi Mabaso. Each actor adds layers of complexity and tension to a narrative driven by desperation, unwavering loyalty, and heart-wrenching decisions.
As anticipation builds, audiences can look forward to the first and debut season of “Marked” hitting Netflix on 31 July 2025. To get a glimpse of this gripping drama, watch the trailer below.
