The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health has suspended a doctor has been suspended after rape allegations were levelled against him at the Port Shepstone Hospital. The incident reportedly happened at the hospital’s premises in August and the doctor was arrested.

The KZN Department of Health said it has noted with grave concern the rape allegations levelled against the doctor. Spokesperson, Mdu Ncalane said what is of serious concern is that the incident is alleged to have taken place within a health facility, during Women’s Month, and against the backdrop of ongoing efforts to address Gender Based Violence, which has ravaged South Africa.

“Noting that this is a criminal matter, which falls under the ambit of the competent law enforcement authorities, the Department is unable to comment further, suffice to mention that the alleged perpetrator has been served with a letter of suspension while in a correctional facility,” he said.

In a separate incident that set tongues wagging, a doctor that was accused of raping a teenager in his consultation room while her father was waiting outside is actually not licensed. In addition to that, the accused is also an undocumented immigrant.

The state argued that the Kimberley-based doctor is a flight risk. It was also revealed by the prosecution that the doctor is in South Africa illegally. His family has returned to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), meaning he had no reason to stay in the country. It also emerged that Kalasa is not registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), despite that Kalasa would issue prescriptions and sick notes for his patients.
