The City of Cape Town’s traffic officers caught four suspects red-handed on Monday morning, 1 August, as they were siphoning fuel from a truck in Parow. A number of drums and pipes used to extract the diesel from the truck were confiscated and a Toyota Quantum taxi, with its number plates missing, was impounded by officers.

The four men – aged 26, 28, 31 and 39 – were arrested and taken to the Parow police station.

City of Cape Town MayCo Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said siphoning fuel was an incredibly opportunistic and dangerous thing to do.

“Even if the suspects had gotten away, travelling with large amounts of fuel in makeshift containers would have been very risky.“While it’s difficult to speculate on the motive, it’s likely that the cost of fuel was a factor. Mercifully, the truck driver wasn’t hurt,” said Smith.
