ICYMI: Lottery player wins $1.28 billion jackpot


A very lucky person in Iowa, the United States (US) has managed to beat the odds by winning the $1.28 billion Mega Millions jackpot – yes, you read that right. The jackpot only entered the billion-dollar milestone on Tuesday, having grown since March as nobody had managed to win – that’s 29 consecutive draws without a jackpot winner.


According to Mega Millions, the ticket holder could get the $1.28 billionaire prize, if they choose the annuity option, which is paid every year for 29 years. However, should they pick the cash option (which most jackpot winners do), they are set to bag an estimated $742 million.

The Mega Millions jackpot has been won four times this year so far – on 28 January 28, 8 March, 12 and 15 April, the website added.

The record-setting haul is just shy of the largest Mega Millions jackpot ever, which was $1.537 billion. It was won in South Carolina in October 2018.

Meanwhile South Africa has had its fair share of overnight millionaires, thanks to Lotto and Powerball winnings. Earlier this month, a whopping R99 million in the 19 July Powerball draw.
