Police in the province of Mkushi Central stopped a truck carrying 70 dogs that was headed for Kasumbalesa.
The incident was confirmed in an interview by acting police commanding officer for the Central Province, Moola Kabwe.
According to him, just 25 of the 70 dogs were discovered alive; the others perished in a container.
Officers stopped an Inveco truck with the registration number ALC 9342 and the dogs inside, according to Mr. Kabwe.
He claimed that the truck was seized at the police checkpoint at Nkumbi.
Six suspects, according to Mr. Kabwe, have subsequently been held at the Mkushi police station.
He claimed that the truck was leaving the province of Nchelenge Luapula.
“The matter has since been handed over to veterinary department. The suspects who are in police custody include James Mwape Chishimba aged 60, Jonathan Moyo aged 28, . Gift Mukupa aged 29 and Stephen Lukali aged 42,” he said.
Other people, according to Mr. Kabwe, include Oscar Kapesa, 39, and Paul Katembula, 28.
