The Real Housewives of Cape Town premiered on DStv on Sunday, and naturally, much like every version of the franchise, it was drama galore.
‘Real Housewives of Cape Town’: Episode 01 review
The first episode of the reality TV show set in the Mother City introduced audiences to the six housewives: Camilla, Mrs Leo or ‘Loveline’, Thato, Bev, Rushda and Rooksie.
Rushda, Mrs Leo and Camilla are the only women currently in wedlock. Camilla, the self-proclaimed queen of Constantia, is a mother of two, married to a botanist and an avid antique collector.
Mrs Leo is the eccentric wife of businessman Mr Leo, Cape Town’s ‘Jay-Z‘ and ‘Beyoncé‘, in her own words, of course. She mothers four children, three girls and a boy.
Rushda is a fitness guru and digital entrepreneur who raises three children with her husband.
The rest of the housewives, Thato, Bev and Rooksie, are not married. Well, Rooksie, the owner of an online high fashion boutique, admits she is, at the very least, involved in a situationship.
Bev, a proud member of Cape Town’s Ferarri members’ club, moved to Cape Town from Ballito after her divorce five years ago, and most of her time is spent shopping with her daughter and enhancing her cosmetic appearance at plastic surgeon Dr Zak’s clinic.
Thato is the boisterous ‘housewife’ with a loud personality. A winemaker by profession, she does not conform to the idea of marriage. In fact, Thato has been in a 17-year relationship with her partner, and together, they raise a pubescent 13-year-old boy.
Here is a review of the first episode:
Thato and Bev are BFFs
Much of the first episode was an introduction to the six housewives. One of the key highlights in the premiere, however, was the budding friendship between Bev and Thato, two totally different personalities that, bizarrely, click.
The ladies refer to themselves as “black and white Barbie”, and in the first episode, Thato invited Bev out for lunch at the Grand Pavilion in Sea Point, where she opened up about her trouble dealing with her cheeky son.
Thato’s frustrations with her son were exacerbated when, earlier that day at the President Hotel, he made cheeky remarks about her excessive drinking and authority as a mother.
Mrs Leo’s cocktail party and Rushda’s stocking dress
The episode’s main attraction was Mrs Leo’s cocktail party hosted at Cabo Beach Club. The six housewives, along with a number of Mrs Leo’s friends, attended the auspicious affair.
This was the first official encounter for the real housewives of Cape Town, and immediately, the cattiness clawed out, especially between Bev and Rushda. The fitness guru had caused quite the kerfuffle over her dress choice, a skimpy-looking black stocking dress.
Mrs Leo, the hostess, was very underwhelmed with the ladies’ interpretation of the memo, but the party went on with the crew using an ‘unmask and sip’ icebreaker to get to know each other.
Mrs Leo and Rooksie clash
As expected, controversy and drama were the order of the day on the first episode of Real Housewives of Cape Town. Mrs Leo and Rooksie have a history. They are the only cast members with a friendship that precedes the show.
Well, it seems the reality TV show was the root of a feud between the two friends, and Rooksie, an outspoken Xhosa woman with a low tolerance for false pretences, had a bone to pick with the event’s host.
The two housewives got into a war of words over Rooksie’s apparent failure to disclose she was joining the cast of the Real Housewives of Cape Town to Mrs Leo.
The public spat ended with no explicit resolve between Mrs Leo and Rooksie. Therefore, fans ought to expect a lot more drama between the two frenemies.
