Bafana Bafana and South African football legend Doctor Khumalo is set to be honoured through a documentary as per a press release by Mzansi Magic.
The pay-television channel announced the news via a statement posted on social media and the docu-series will be titled, 16V Doctor Khumalo: Untold. According to the release, the film will premiere on October 2 at 20:00 on channel 161 where the former Kaizer Chiefs darling will tell his story.
Khumalo, affectionately known as 16V, rose to fame through his silky dribbling skills as a midfielder for both Amakhosi and the national side, Bafana back in the 1990s. “In the docuseries, Khumalo tells his own story, alongside former teammates, ex-footballers, politicians, celebrities, and media personalities who share commentary and personal anecdotes,” a press statement reads.
Speaking for the channel, M-Net director of local entertainment channel Shirley Adonisi said they are excited to tell such a beautiful story. “We’re excited to be premiering this exclusive docuseries on Mzansi Magic. Doctor Khumalo’s fame and impact transcended football – he was and still is an icon,” Adonisi said.
“16V Doctor Khumalo: Untold is a celebratory, raw, and honest portrait of one of our living legends. “As a channel, we are proud to have the opportunity to honour our national icons while they are still alive. This is a series you don’t want to miss.”
The film is set to delve into the man behind the name, fame, and legend and paints an intimate portrait of the man who showed up and showed out even when he navigated the losses of his closest loved ones.
Born in Soweto, the 55-year-old television pundit and PUMA ambassador also played for a Major League Soccer club Columbus Crew and played in Argentina for Ferro Carril Oeste.
He was an instrumental figure under coach Clive Barker in 1996 as he helped the national team lift the CAF African Cup of Nations on homesoil – he played 50 times for Bafana and scored on nine occasions.
