The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) played a major role in helping late songstress Bulelwa “Zahara” Mkutukana save her Roodepoort home last year. The Loliwe hitmaker ⁤ was on the verge of losing her townhouse as a ⁤result of defaulting on her monthly instalments of R17 665,⁣ 40. Nedbank, which had given⁤ her a R1.9 million ​loan, was set to auction off her home to​ the highest bidder.

After going public and ​asking for donations, ⁢Zahara’s house ‍was saved. The singer had received help from her fans and one major donor; whom‍ she ​said was a ‍businessman. ​It has since emerged that it was actually the⁢ EFF.

“This tore me apart ⁢at first, which is why I spoke ⁣about it. I ⁣felt like I could have knocked‍ on so many doors but they were closed. But I‍ knew that there would be someone out there who could listen and understand. All ‍the R50 ⁢notes, R100, and R1000 I got helped me,” she said at the time.

EFF spokesperson,​ Sinawo Thambo confirmed that the organisation‍ helped ‍the award-winning singer. “We are not in the business of boasting about‍ the ​assistance‌ we have given‌ to our people but⁢ we can‍ confirm that ‌we have helped Zahara because she was⁣ very close to our hearts,” he ​said.

In a statement on ⁤Tuesday, the EFF ‌said the much-loved ⁢musician must be remembered as a pioneer in the music industry, who ‌broke through in an industry‌ that often discards⁣ women and destroys‌ the lives‌ of those who enter⁢ it. “She made her name through talent⁢ alone, and her lasting memory in our ⁣hearts and minds must ⁣be ⁤her ability to bring comfort and⁣ resonate with the struggles of the poorest of the⁤ poor,” read ⁤the statement in part. She will be laid to rest on Saturday, 23 December, in East London in the Eastern Cape.
